The state of Minnesota was formed from the eastern half of the Territory of Minnesota, and it was the 32nd state to be admitted into the Union in 1858. Its population of over five million inhabitants mainly descended from Western European immigrants.
Due to the rapid industrialization and modernization of Minnesota´s agricultural industry, most of the state´s population was already living in urban areas in the mid 1950´s. Sectors such as financial services and real estate and tourism began to have increasing importance in the state´s economy. Diversification of the economy of Minnesota continues until today.
Minnesota´s economy has been transforming over the past 200 years, from an economy based on commodities to one based on finished products and services. Early economic activities were agriculture and fur trading. Agriculture is still an important part of the state´s economy, but it only occupies a small percentage of the population (2%.) Minnesota is a leading producer within the United States with respect to sugar beets, soybeans and corn.
